Elisabetta Cocciaretto caused a major upset on the second day of Wimbledon 2025 when she took down World No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the first round on Tuesday.

Cocciaretto, ranked 116th in the world, defeated Pegula 6-2, 6-3 in 58 minutes on Court 2. Two years ago, the Italian had lost to the same opponent in the third round at the grass Major.

The 24-year-old Cocciaretto faces either Germany’s Tatjana Maria or Katie Volynets, another American in the second round.

Cocciaretto was born in Ancona, Italy. Her parents introduced her to tennis when she was six years old. She is coached by Fausto Scolari.

Cocciaretto made the semifinals of the Junior Australian Open in 2018, showing her potential. The same year, she made her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Italy.

A year later, on her WTA Tour main draw debut as a wildcard at the Italian Open, she lost to Amanda Anisimova.

2023 was a breakout season for the Italian as she reached her maiden Tour-level final in Hobart and won her maiden title in Lausanne. In the same season, she achieved a career high ranking of 29.
