Wimbledon 2025: Organisers allow players to pay tribute to Diogo Jota with black armbands – reports

Wimbledon organisers have allowed the players to pay tribute to Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota with black armbands, according to multiple media reports.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passed away on Thursday in a car accident at the age of 28.

Wimbledon has a strict dress code with the players required to wear white. However, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club has decided to relax the rule.

Portuguese Francisco Cabral is one of the players who plans to wear the black armband.

“[Jota] is a big name, not just in Portugal but in the world. He was a great human being with a nice family and three kids. My best wishes to them all. For his family, it is very tough to recover from that.,” said Cabral after winning his men’s doubles opener with Austrian partner Lucas Miedler.

On wearing the black armband, he said, ““I couldn’t get one in time today, but I want to in the next match.”

Cabral and Miedler face the all-Czech pair of Petr Nouza and Patrik Rikl in the second round.
