South African club Mamelodi Sundowns qualified for the revamped tournament via the CAF ranking pathway. During the qualifying period (2020-24), it reached the quarterfinals and semifinals of the CAF Champions League twice apiece, ensuring it qualified for the tournament.
Who is Lucas Ribeiro Costa?
Lucas Ribeiro Costa is a Brazilian footballer who began his youth career with Brazilian club Pinheiros in 2017 and later that year, moved to France to join Valenciennes.
The 26-year-old made his professional debut for Virton in a Belgian First Division B win over Roeselare in 2019. The following year, he signed with Belgian Pro League side Charleroi.
After multiple loan moves to different clubs in Belgium, he signed with Mamelodi for an undisclosed fee in 2023.
In his first season, he helped the team lift the South African Premiership – the top tier of football in the country – as well as the African Football League title.
He has made 86 appearances for the club, scoring 36 goals and assisting 23 in that period.
