NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched a fierce attack on the BJP accusing the party of targeting Bengalis attempting to stir communal fear, and conspiring to erase their identity. “BJP unleashed terror on Bengalis, their language; if this doesn’t stop, our resistance movement will reach Delhi,” she said at TMC’s Martyrs’ Day rally.Banerjee alleged that the BJP-led government was working against the interests of Bengal. “American President controls BJP-led central government,” she claimed, before questioning the silence of the Centre during the deportation of illegal immigrants from the US. “What was BJP doing when US sent back illegal immigrants in shackles?” she asked.Warning of intensified protests, Banerjee told TMC workers to organise demonstrations every weekend after July 27 against what she described as “BJP’s attacks on Bengalis”. She also accused the BJP and the Election Commission of plotting to remove Bengali names from the voters’ list. “BJP and EC conspiring against Bengal, want to remove Bengalis from voter list,” she charged, adding that if attempts like NRC or “SIR-like exercises” were introduced in the state, the TMC would strongly resist. “We will never allow it,” she said. The chief minister also took aim at Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying, “Assam CM, who cannot properly handle his own state, [is] meddling in affairs of Bengal.”Highlighting Bengal’s diversity, she said, “Bengal has 1.5 crore migrants from other states, but they never face any problem.” In contrast, she alleged that the BJP was pushing a narrative against Bengali speakers.Reaffirming her party’s political ambitions, she said, “We have to win more seats in 2026 Bengal assembly polls, then aim to defeat BJP at Centre… Our fight will continue till we oust BJP from Centre.”TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee also targeted the BJP, calling it a “Bangla-Birodhi party” and accusing it of targeting Bengalis and their language. “The BJP wants to take Bengalis to detention camps. I want to tell them clearly — after the 2026 elections, it is you whom we will send to the detention camps,” he said. He questioned the BJP’s silence on Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks against the Bengali language and warned that TMC MPs may speak in Bengali in Parliament. Predicting BJP’s decline, he said, “They won 77 seats last time… mark my words, it will happen.”
