Proficiency in English is crucial for excelling in higher education and communicating efficiently on a global scale, said Vice-Chancellor of VIT-AP University S.V. Kota Reddy.

He was speaking at “English Language Development Initiative” jointly launched by The Hindu and VIT-AP University on Saturday at a Zilla Parishad School in Mandadam village of Thullur mandal in Guntur district.

“As English is a vital tool for success in both academic institutions and professional fields, the initiative is launched with an aim to encourage students to learn and master the language to be able to climb the ladder of success in life,” he said. As part of Corporate Social Responsibility (SCR), the University has adopted four Mandal Parishad and two Zilla Parishad schools at Inavolu, Sakhamuru, Velagapudi and Mandadam mandals of Guntur district.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the initiative to foster English language development among government school students could focus on improving reading comprehension and knowledge acquisition. This could involve implementing programmes that emphasize foundational literacy skills.

He said that the VIT-AP University was actively engaged with rural students helping them hone their skills. He said reading competitions and other activities would be conducted for students on a regular basis. He invited the students to visit the University, which was equipped with modern facilities and labs. He said that to support the advancement of rural students, the institution had been sponsoring toppers (one boy and one girl) from each of the 26 districts across the State, who pursued their Intermediate course in a government junior college.

As part of the initiative, faculty from VIT-AP University will impart English language skills to students, who will also receive copies of The Hindu in School weekend magazine and Young World magazine.

Registrar M. Jagadeesh Chandra said that the students should take pride in their mother tongue but also give importance to other languages which will help them communicate efficiently with diverse segments of people. He said that English is widely considered a valuable language for achieving life goals due to its global prevalence in communication and education, opening doors to increased career opportunities and cultural understanding.

Mandal Education Officer M. Lakshminarayana advised the students to read The Hindu in School and Young World to improve their vocabulary and broaden their horizons.
