The trailer for Anupam Kher’s new directorial, Tanvi The Great, was launched in Mumbai on Monday (June 30). After a noteworthy festival run, including a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s film market, Kher’s latest will arrive in Indian theatres on July 18.

The film narrates the story of the titular Tanvi Raina (Shubhangi Dutt), a young woman with autism who resolves to join the Army, determined to fulfill by her late father’s dream of saluting the Indian flag at Siachen glacier. Tanvi, whose father Captain Samar Pratap Raina was martyred in the line of duty, shows up at the Lansdowne Cantonment to try out for the military. Despite the fact that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) cannot qualify for the Army, she is encouraged to train with aspiring jawans, overcoming challenges and allaying the cynicism of her grandfather (Kher).

Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani, Karan Tacker, Iain Glen, Pallavi Joshi and Arvind Swamy feature in the cast. Kher essays the role of Tanvi’s befuddled and initially dismissive grandfather, Colonel Khanna.

Tanvi The Great is written by Ankur Suman and Abhishek Dixit alongside Kher. The film is inspired by Kher’s niece, who is on the autism spectrum. Kher, a veteran actor, made his directorial debut 2002’s Om Jai Jagadish. He has teamed with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani’s Excel Entertainment for the release of Tanvi The Great.

“Everyone who watches Tanvi The Great will walk away a little kinder perhaps even changed,” Kher said in a statement. “This film is my tribute to every person who is different but no less. It’s the story of an autistic, brilliant, and fiercely determined girl who dreams of joining the Indian Army. This is one of the most important films of my career, and I’m confident audiences in India will connect with it just as deeply as those around the world already have.”

Tanvi The Great was recently shown at the New York Indian Film Festival. The film’s premiere was attended by Hollywood legend Robert De Niro.

Oscar-winning MM Keeravani has composed the music of Tanvi The Great. The film is produced by Anupam Kher Studios in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation.
