[Raavov.com News Desk] – A Virgin Australia flight was forced into emergency procedures after a fire broke out mid-flight, with early reports suggesting that a portable power bank may have been the cause.

The incident occurred aboard Flight VA 350, which was en route from Queenstown, New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia, when smoke was seen emerging from a passenger’s seat area. According to passengers and crew, the fire was quickly extinguished using onboard fire extinguishers, and no injuries were reported.

Virgin Australia issued a statement confirming that the crew “responded immediately and appropriately,” and that the aircraft landed safely in Melbourne where emergency services met the flight on arrival.

Power Bank Likely to Blame

Preliminary investigations indicate that the source of the fire may have been a lithium-ion battery inside a personal power bank carried by a passenger. Such batteries, if damaged or defective, can overheat and catch fire—a phenomenon known as thermal runaway.

Virgin Australia, like most airlines, allows power banks in carry-on luggage but not in checked baggage, and they must meet certain safety standards. Aviation authorities are now reminding travelers to ensure their devices are approved, undamaged, and stored safely.

Growing Concerns Over Battery Fires

This is not the first incident involving battery-powered devices on commercial flights. In recent years, battery fires have become an increasing concern for airlines globally, with several cases prompting emergency landings or evacuations.

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is expected to review the incident, and passengers may see stricter enforcement or updated guidelines for carrying electronic devices in the future.

No Disruption to Other Flights

Virgin Australia has confirmed that the aircraft involved has been taken out of service for inspection. Meanwhile, all other flights are operating as scheduled.

Safety Tip for Travelers:
Always carry your power banks in cabin baggage. Do not use, charge, or store them in seats or tight compartments during takeoff and landing.
