NRI Arrested In Connection With Marathoner Fauja Singh’s Death | India News

The Punjab police have arrested a 30-year-old NRI in connection with the hit-and-run death of legendary marathoner Fauja Singh.

The accused, identified as Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a resident of Dasupur village in the Kartarpur area of Jalandhar district, was taken into custody on Tuesday night, according to a report by India Today.

According to the police, the Indian-British Sikh marathon runner of Punjabi descent was hit by an unidentified vehicle when he was crossing the road in his native village on Monday.

“Sardar Fauja Singh was a British marathon runner, whose age was about 114 years.3 His native village is Beas.4 It falls in the Jalandhar Rural District, and its police station is Adampur. Yesterday afternoon, around 3:00 pm, after having his lunch, Sardar Fauja Singh went out for a walk on the road…There, on the main road between Jalandhar and Pathankot, an unknown vehicle hit him,” ANI reported, quoting SSP Rural Harvinder Singh Virk.

Singh was rushed to Shrimann Hospital in Jalandhar, where he later succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00 pm, police said. 

“He was admitted to Shrimant Hospital, Jalandhar. He died there due to injuries at around 7 in the evening. An FIR has been registered in Adampur Police Station under relevant sections. The investigation is underway,” ANI reported, quoting SSP Rural Harvinder Singh Virk.

Fauja Singh, believed to be the oldest marathon runner, began running at the age of 89 after the tragic death of his wife and son in an accident. He went on to participate in 18 marathons, starting with the London Marathon in 2000.

He retired after completing his last three marathons, Toronto in 2011, London in 2012, and Hong Kong in 2013.

Fauja Singh earned the nickname ‘The Turbaned Tornado’ and became a global Sikh icon, inspiring millions around the world.

Besides the marathon, he would participate in many long-distance running disciplines in the Masters’ category. At the age of 100, he accomplished eight world age group records in one day, at the special Ontario Masters Association Fauja Singh Invitational Meet, held at Birchmount Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

His biography, titled Turbaned Tornado, was formally released in the Attlee Room of Britain’s House of Lords on July 7, 2011.

He was one of the torchbearers for the London Olympics in 2012 and was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to sport and charity.
