Nigeria to explore embroidery sub-sector’s potential to create jobs

Tayo Bashir, technical advisor on industrial training and development to the senior special assistant to the president, told a meeting of fashion industry stakeholders that embroidery, once considered a niche or informal craft, is emerging as a viable economic sector with the power to generate employment and boost national income.

Embroidery Chief, which specialises in selling and supporting embroidery machines, in partnership with two Chinese firms DAHAO and Futong, unveiled an initiative to upscale the embroidery industry through training and affordable access to advanced machines.

Embroidery offers real potential for income generation, entrepreneurship and youth empowerment, he noted.

Embroidery Chief CEO Lukman Abdulsalam emphasised the urgent need to raise awareness about the untapped potential within the fashion sector.

Abdulsalam said that as part of the initiative, a hub each will be established in 10 states, beginning with Lagos and Kano. Each hub will be equipped with 50 embroidery machines, which will be offered to users at subsidised rates, according to domestic media reports.

The machines will come with comprehensive training packages covering design software, machine operation and maintenance.
