IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Shubman Gill breaks record for most runs in debut series as India captain

Shubman Gill continued his rich vein of form and broke another batting record during day four of the second Test between India and England in Birmingham.

Gill went past Virat Kohli to record the most runs by an Indian in their debut series as captain. Kohli had scored 449 runs against Australia in 2014/15 when he took over the charge from MS Dhoni.

The 25-year-old Gill crossed the mark on Saturday as he notched up 161 runs in the second innings, taking his series tally to 585.

Gill had scored 269 runs in the first innings, the highest by an Indian captain, and when he crossed 25 in the second, he broke Kohli’s record of highest match aggregate by an Indian skipper. He further broke Gavaskar’s record of 344 runs to register most runs by an Indian batter in a Test.

At Headingley in the first Test, Shubman Gill had struck 147 runs in the first innings, which was also his highest Test score.
