Boeing shares open 5.5% lower after Air India crash

Shares of airplane maker Boeing declined about 5.5% to $202.17 when Wall Street opened for trade Thursday (June 12, 2025), hours after a London-bound Air India aircraft crashed near Gujarat’s Ahmedabad airport. Though the first ever fatal accident of their Dreamliner plane, Thursday’s occurrence rekindled concerns about the safety of their aircrafts which has bothered the company for some time now. The Virginia-headquartered airplane maker in May had finalised a $1.1 billion settlement, inclusive of fine and compensation, with the U.S’ Department of Justice to avoid persecution in a fraud case relating to two 737 MAX airplane crashes that took 346 lives.

Steeper fall in pre-market
Reacting heavily in the immediate aftermath of the crash, Boeing’s shares were trading 8% lower in pre-market trade on Thursday. At the time of writing (8:30 p.m. IST), the scrip was trading 4.99% lower at 203.31 apiece.
The airplane manufacturer informed in their statement that it was in contact with Air India, further affirming about extending support to the private carrier.
Thursday’s development also reverberated an impact on Boeing’s more prominent supplier Spirit AeroSystems, as well as maker of airplane engines GE Aerospace. Both the scrips opened nearly 3% lower. Although there is no clarity if the aircraft was powered by engines of the Ohio-headquartered company. However, in a social media post, the engine manufacturer wrote, “We have activated our emergency response team, and we are prepared to support our customer and the investigation.”
242 passengers onboard
The Gatwick (London)-bound aircraft crashed within minutes of take-off at about 1:30 p.m. local time. Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft was carrying 242 passengers and crew members, inclusive of 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. At the time of writing, the exact number of causalities were yet to be ascertained.
The cause of the occurrence also was yet to be learnt.
