Mohun Bagan agrees deal in principle with Brazilian forward Robson Robinho

Mohun Bagan Super Giant is looking to add more firepower to its arsenal and is in the advanced stages of negotiations with Brazilian forward Robson Robinho.

The 29-year-old, who has previously played in the Brazilian Serie A (Brazil’s top flight), is currently with EC Água Santa (SP), a São Paulo-based club playing in the region’s third division, and has made six appearances for it this year.

Robinho is understood to have agreed in principle to a deal with Mohun Bagan, committing that he would only play for the Mariners if he chooses to come to India.

The forward was on the shortlist of both Kolkata giants—Mohun Bagan and East Bengal—with the latter looking to reunite him with Oscar Bruzon.

The duo won four consecutive Bangladesh Premier League titles (2020 to 2024) with Bashundhara Kings, and the Spaniard was very keen to bring him to his new club.

Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, was seeking a replacement for wide forward Greg Stewart, whose contract expired last month. Ultimately, it was the Indian Super League (ISL) champion that secured an initial agreement.

However, the tenure of his contract will only be finalised after assessing his medical condition.

Robinho has played most of his professional football in Brazil but made a significant mark in South Asian football during his stint with Bashundhara. He won seven trophies with the Bangladeshi side, scoring 64 goals and providing 49 assists in 97 appearances.

He can play on either wing or as a No. 10, offering a like-for-like replacement for Stewart, while also pairing up with Jason Cummings or Jamie Maclaren up front.

Mohun Bagan is also looking to secure the services of Mumbai City centre-back Mehtab Singh, who is in the final year of his contract. However, the two parties have yet to agree on an acceptable bid.
