No More Scrapping Of 10/15 Year Old Vehicles? Amid Criticism, Government Agrees To… | Mobility News

New Delhi: Amid heavy criticism, the Delhi government has urged the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to put its contentious order to deny refueling of ‘end-of-life’ (EOL) vehicles at petrol pumps on hold. The controversial move, aimed at combating vehicular pollution, had sparked widespread criticism across the National Capital Territory.

EOL vehicles are those that have exceeded their legal age limit of 10 years for diesel and 15 years for petrol vehicles. Since the CAQM’s order came into effect on July 1, several vehicles have been seized and handed over to registered scrap dealers for scrapping. Owners found violating the rule also faced hefty fines.

However, after drawing significant public outrage and debate, the Delhi government decided to withdraw the specific order denying fuel supply to EOL vehicles. This decision provides significant relief to lakhs of old vehicle owners who were facing immediate challenges.

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa writes to the Commission for Air Quality Management to place on hold the enforcement of Direction No. 89, which mandates the denial of fuel to End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles in Delhi.

“We urge the Commission to put the implementation of Direction No. 89 on hold with immediate effect till the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system is seamlessly integrated across the entire NCR. We are confident that the ongoing multi-pronged efforts of the Delhi Government will achieve substantial improvements in air quality,” reads the letter.

He told reporters, “We have informed them that the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras that were installed are not a robust system, and there are still many challenges with them. Technical glitches, non-working sensors, and malfunctioning speakers, all these challenges are there. It has not been integrated with the NCR data yet. It is not able to identify HSRP plates.”
