LeBron James is opting into his $52.6 million additional year with the Los Angeles Lakers, multiple news reports on Sunday claimed.
ESPN and The Athletic were among those to first report the decision. The extension will make the 40-year-old enter his 23rd in the league, the most for any player, overtaking Vince Carter.
James had suffered a knee injury in Lakers’ final game in the post-season, a loss to Minnesota Timberwolves. But he had hinted that he would opt for an extension with the Lakers for an eighth year.
“I have a lot of time to take care of my injury, my knee, the rest of my body and make sure I’m as close to 100% as possible when training camp begins in late September,” James had said in an interview with The Associated Press.
The additional season also gives him the shot at breaking Robert Parish’s mark of 1,611 games for the most matches played in the NBA.
