Wimbledon 2025: Who will Carlos Alcaraz face in second round?

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will face British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round of Wimbledon 2025 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

While Spain’s Alcaraz beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, the 21-year-old Tarvet enjoyed a dream debut at his home Slam as he took down Swiss qualifier 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.

Tarvet, who came through three rounds of qualifying, thrilled a packed crowd around Court Four in the first-round battle which lasted two hours 18 minutes.

Second-round losers are guaranteed 99,000 pounds (USD 135,000)in prize money, but because Tarvet is still a student at the University of San Diego, he will miss out on a potentially career-changing windfall.

Under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules in the US, players are required to stay amateur and are restricted in how much prize money they can claim from professional tournaments. World No. 733 Tarvet will be entitled to only USD 10,000 plus any expenses he incurs.

However, Tarvet has already risen to a new career high of 390 in the live ATP Rankings and is likely to turn professional after completing his final year of college in California.

Tarvet was the only British player who managed to come through qualifying, having defeated World No. 124 Terence Atmane of France, World No. 207 Alexis Galarneau of Canada and World No. 141 Alexander Blockx of Belgium. He took the total number of home players in the main singles draws to 23, including 14 wildcards.
