26-year-old sets mother on fire at Manjeswaram in Kerala’s Kasaragod; police suspect drug addiction

A 60-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by her son at Nalangi, in Manjeswaram, Kasaragod, Kerala, early Thursday morning.
The victim, Hilda Monthero, died on the spot and her son Melvin Monthero (26), believed to be under the influence of drugs, is absconding.
According to the police, the incident came to light after a neighbour noticed heavy smoke and flames rising from Hilda’s residence. By the time they rushed in, Hilda’s charred body was found inside the house. Melvin was seen fleeing the scene.
Neighbour attacked
Melvin also reportedly attacked a neighbour, Lolita, who tried to stop him from escaping. She sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kasaragod. Her condition remains unknown.
Melvin, a construction worker, was living with his mother, while his brother Alvin Monthero works in Kuwait.
The police suspect frequent quarrels between the two related to Melvin’s alleged drug addiction and financial issues may have led to the killing.
The police are searching for Melvin. The manhunt has been extended to neighbouring districts and across the Karnataka border, with checks in Mangaluru, Bantwal and Sullia.
The police are also probing whether Melvin used any specific weapon in the act or had external help.
